The Town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, operating under a Council-Manager form of government, seeks a Fire Chief who is a visionary and innovative leader with a demonstrated history of building morale within the department, as well as a being a skilled collaborator and advocate with local government and community. The position is open due to retirement. Reporting to the Town Manager, the Fire Chief will lead a 124 year old fire department with distinctive Carolina blue and white fire trucks that signify the close “town and gown” relationship with neighboring UNC.    The Chief will supervise a $9.6M budget, 96 budgeted personnel who work in operations (79, life safety (8), Training and Safety (3), Emergency Management (2) and administration (4) along with five stations and a training center. CHFD carries an ISO rating of 2. Handling about 5,000 incidents per year, the department has five engine companies, one truck company, one specialized squad and a Battalion Chief on 24 hour, 3/4 schedule.    The Department is responsible for providing fire protection  on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus and UNC Hospitals complex in Chapel Hill. Qualifications:   The Town seeks a fire safety leader with a minimum of 10 years progressive fire safety experience and 5-7 years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including fire suppression, prevention, EMS and administrative work at rank of Battalion Chief or higher. A Bachelor’s degree is not required but is preferred as is a master’s degree.  NFA certification is preferred.  Salary and Benefits:  The pay band is $99,069-$129,781.  Base salary and compensation are negotiable within the band based on experience and qualifications.  The Town offers a generous benefits package.
