The City of Lansing, MI (115,000) is seeking a strategic leader to become an Assistant Fire Chief in our city. Lansing is in the heart of Michigan, where the Grand River and the Red Cedar River converge. It is an energetic and diverse region, with vibrant neighborhoods and picturesque towns located within the Greater Lansing area. It is the capital of Michigan and the states’ sixth-largest city.

It also has a City Council, which is the legislative and policy-making body that sets policies, approves budgets, determines tax rates, and adopts ordinances and resolutions to govern the City. The City of Lansing operates with a fire protection force of 209, six stations, six engine companies, two truck companies, five ALS medic units, and associated emergency response equipment. The Fire Department has an adopted FY 22/23 budget of $40.2 million. In 2021, the Department responded to over 23,000 emergency medical, fire, hazardous material, hazardous removal, and citizen-assist calls. Lansing Fire Department operates fire suppression, rescue extrication and ALS ambulance transport services.

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Assistant Chief may be assigned as Assistant Chief of Operations or Assistant Chief of Administration. The City of Lansing is seeking an Assistant Fire Chief who will contribute to an innovative, progressive, and creative collaborative management style with the keen ability to communicate, listen, engage, and respond appropriately to the needs and input of others. This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Safety, Fire Science or a closely related field supplemented by courses in firefighting technology, fire administration, and current and progressive concepts for the delivery of effective, high-quality Emergency Medical Services.

Ten (10) years of experience in the fire service with a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience at a level equivalent to Division/Battalion Chief in the Lansing Fire Department is required. Budgeting, policy/procedure review and fire data collection experience is required. Completion of NIMS ICS 100, 200, 300, 400 is required. State of MI Fire Officer III certification or equivalent is preferred. Current Paramedic or EMT is also preferred. Additionally, a Master’s Degree, EFO/CFO certification/designation, knowledge of ISO PPC Classification Rating and Fire Accreditation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence experience is preferred.

Must possess and/or be able to obtain State of MI driver’s license. Any combination of equivalent education and experience may be accepted.
