Due to a recent promotion, the City of DeKalb is looking to fill the position of Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.  DeKalb is located 60 miles west of Downtown Chicago and home to Northern Illinois University (NIU). The DeKalb Fire Department proudly serves over 40,000 residents and is accountable for all fire and emergency service request within the City, NIU, and the DeKalb Fire Protection District. The Department service areas is approximately 55 square miles.

The Department is comprised of two divisions: Operations and Administration and consists of 61 sworn and 2 civilian employees. Staff includes a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief of Operations, Deputy Fire Chief of Training, 3 Battalion Chiefs, 3 Captains, 9 Lieutenants/Paramedics, 1 Lieutenant of EMS Coordination, 1 Lieutenant of Fire Prevention, 41 Firefighter/Paramedics, and 2 administrative support personnel.

The next Deputy Fire Chief of Operations will be a collaborative leader who will engage in a visible and active role in both the department and community.  The following credentials are required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in Fire Administration or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in fire service operations required.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory and/or training experience preferred.
  •  State of Illinois (IDPH) licensed Emergency Medical Technician – Basic or Paramedic required.
  • Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal – Fire Officer II or Company Fire Officer, required
  • Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal – Fire Officer III or National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer desired.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training as required (ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800). ICS 300 & 400 is desired.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
