Welcome to the 2022-2023 Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment
Due to the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the City of Boise reserves the right to make changes, as needed, to the examination date, time, location, process and procedures, including cancelling the examinations, at any time with or without notice.


  • May 2, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. MST:  The City of Boise will officially open this year’s Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment.
  • August 31, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. MST:  Deadline for application and written examination payment. The $30.00 testing fee must be received by this date. More detail in Step 1 and 2 below.
  • September 30, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. MST: Deadline for scheduling your written examination. This is described in Step 3 below.
  • October 24, 2021: Deadline to obtain EMT Certification.

If you fail to meet any of these deadlines, you will not be considered as an applicant for the 2022-2023 Entry-Level Firefighter Recruitment.

Step 2: Pay for the Written Exam
The cost for the Entry-Level Firefighter written exam is $30.00. Payment must be submitted via PayPal only. No other form of payment will be accepted.
If you are using someone else’s PayPal account, enter the applicant’s name in the comment section so the payment can be matched and verified. Note: Payments for this exam are nonrefundable.

Step 3: Schedule Written Exam Date and Time
Once the City of Boise has reviewed your application and verified payment, you will receive an email notification to self-schedule for the written exam through your application account. Note: This process can take up to a week. It will be important that you check your account regularly to receive notifications regarding your application.

Entry-Level Written Exams will be held at the Boise Centre on the Grove on the following dates:

  • Friday, October 7, 2022
  • Saturday, October 8, 2022

ADA Accommodations:

Essential Functions

Receives training and develops skills and techniques in firefighting, hazardous materials response, emergency medical and lifesaving activities. (40%)

Responds to fire scenes, natural disasters, vehicle accidents, and various medical emergencies and works as part of a team or individually to combat fires, rescue victims and/or render support. Assists in extricating victims trapped or injured in vehicles, structures, canals, etc. Assists in assessing the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures. Administers basic or advanced life support (based on licensure level) at emergency scenes. Observes, records and reports patient’s conditions, vital signs, injury assessments and treatment provided to other EMS providers and hospital medical staff. May accompany patients to the hospital for continued treatment during transport. Documents the condition of patients and the emergency medical treatment provided in the
department records management system. (40%)

Follows established departmental policies, procedures and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental and/or infection control standards. Participates in training and readiness drills to develop and hone techniques and procedures in all manner of rescue, fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical and lifesaving practices. Participates in equipment and firefighting drills, testing, and training. Completes coursework on related safety, fire, and rescue topics as well as fire causes and behavioral theories. Studies how changing weather and atmospheric patterns affect fire patterns and fire suppression tactics, and learns to identify potentially dangerous combinations of weather and fire. Reads and studies texts and manuals to learn fire behavior theories. Uses mathematical formulas for computing hydraulics, fire containment and extinguishment practices and procedures. (10%)

Inspects and tests emergency medical, fire suppression, and related tools and equipment to ensure serviceability and compliance. Ensures all tools and equipment are safely and securely in their designated positions. Performs physical inventory counts and records tools, equipment, and related items as required. Cleans, refuels, and performs basic and routine inspections on vehicles including cleaning and waxing. Performs general maintenance to station grounds such as cleaning, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, shoveling snow, painting, cutting grass, and related duties. May be assigned to the following specialty area based on requirements of the organization: Paramedic – Trains and responds to victims in need of emergency medical care. Provides advanced life support in accordance with department policies/procedures and system protocols. Hazardous Materials Team- Trains and responds to hazardous materials incidents to identify, classify, verify, control, contain and decontaminate known and unknown chemical, biological, toxicological and radioactive materials; has an advanced education in chemical & toxicological terminology and behavior; has an advanced understanding of the risks within the community specific to HM (e.g. locations, chemicals, quantities). Technical Rescue Team – Trains and responds to technical rescue incidents, including confined space, trench collapse, building collapse and high/low angle rope rescue; has an advanced understanding of the risks within the community specific to technical rescue (e.g. locations, access, special needs).

Dive Rescue Team – Trains and responds to water rescue incidents including swift water, subsurface dive and ice rescue from shore and/or watercraft; has an advanced understanding of the risks within the community specific to water rescue (e.g. locations, access, special needs).

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Team- Trains and responds to airport and aircraft incidents including passenger rescue and firefighting; has an understanding of airport operations and procedures related to security, maneuvering, and communication with air traffic controllers and aircraft; has an advanced understanding of the risks within the community specific to aircraft emergencies (e.g. types of aircraft, access, special needs, index). (10%)

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Successful completion of a Probationary Firefighter program approved by Boise Fire Department.

Must be a US Citizen or eligible to work in the US in accordance with the US Citizenship and Immigration Service, be at least 18 years of age (there is no maximum age limit), and possess a high school diploma or GED at the time of employment.

Knowledge of the operation of apparatus and equipment and methods used in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and in rescue work; rules and regulations of the fire department; the maintenance of equipment; building construction and related fire codes as well as the location ofhazardous occupancies in the municipality; water systems and water mains.

Ability to meet physical and medical standards based upon the essential job tasks outlined in the current edition ofNFPA 1582; learn firefighting, fire prevention, fire protection, emergency medical and rescue techniques and methods and to apply such information to specific situations; perform physically arduous work requiring strength and agility during training; read, understand and follow written and oral instructions; add, subtract, multiply and divide; work with fractions, decimals, and percentages;

plan an appropriate course of action to reach an objective; develop alternative solutions to problems and to evaluate their respective utilities; make sound decisions quickly under pressure; recognize specific signs or symptoms which indicate a larger or broader problem or situation; focus on a task and ignore distractions; extract specific details from a complex set of information; combine details from several sources to reach a solution; compare information from several sources for similarities and differences;

recall and apply information (codes, building locations, proper fire extinguishing techniques); remember visual information (photograph, pictorial display, building layout, map, etc.); apply simple mechanical principles (leverage, force, acceleration, friction, etc.); maintain and keep current education, technique, and skills needed for successfully fighting fires, handling hazardous materials, and performing emergency medical and lifesaving procedures; visually recognize colored labels and placards; express

thoughts verbally in a clear, understandable manner; explain complicated information in simple language; perform routine and repetitive work; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record, as outlined in the City of Boise Vehicle Usage Regulation in effect when the applicable Collective Labor Agreement is signed.

Licensing And Other Requirements

  • Valid Idaho driver’s license
  • Valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification
  • Paramedic: Valid Idaho Paramedic Certification; Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support or equivalent; Valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support or equivalent

Special Requirements

Drug Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post – Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is always lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting/carrying up to 101+ pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 101+ pounds. The noise level is frequently very loud. Work includes the sensory ability to talk, hear, smell, and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, run, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity. Additional physical efforts include: performing fire fighting operations while wearing heavy (about 50 lbs.) protective clothing and gear in extremely hot and toxic environments; climbing ladders; working in enclosed and confined spaces with limited visibility.

Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wet and humid conditions, and areas of dust, odors, mist, and gases or other airborne matter. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids, and chemicals.
