Located in beautiful Central Virginia, the Charlottesville Fire Department is a Commission on Public Safety Excellence Accredited Agency and Insurance Services Office Class 1, 95 member, career fire department that provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, technical rescue, and community risk reduction services to the residents of Charlottesville, the University of Virginia, and parts of Albemarle County. The fire department executive management team is comprised of the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief of Operations, and Deputy Chief of Administrations. The department recently created a third Deputy Chief position to lead the department’s Community Risk Reduction Section.

Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction will serve as a key member of the department’s executive team and will be responsible for the proper and efficient operation of the Community Risk Reduction Section. In addition to the required experience, certification, and education, the ideal candidate will possess high-level executive leadership skills including the ability to forge effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, experience in successfully leading adaptive organizational change, and the ability to develop and implement creative, data-driven solutions to address a wide range of community risks.

The Deputy Chief of Community Risk Reduction will have direct accountability for all aspects of the assigned portfolio, including all business, service delivery, personnel, financial, strategic, and operational matters. This position may be asked to serve as the City’s fire official. Additionally this person may be asked to serve in the role of acting fire chief in the fire chief’s absence. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is performed independently, with diverse functional areas and more specialization and ability to train others.

This new position will provide a unique opportunity for the right professional to develop an evidence-based, best practice Community Risk Reduction Section that will serve as a model for the region, the state, and the nation.

The salary range is $73,474 to $143,265 annually. Salary offer will be based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt, position.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree with major work in fire science or related field.
  • Extensive fire service experience (including those currently holding the rank of Battalion Chief with the Charlottesville Fire Department OR those currently holding the rank of Captain with the Charlottesville Fire Department for a minimum of three years of continuous service)
  • Within one year of appointment, must reside within range of the 800MHz radio system (City of Charlottesville or Albemarle County).

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree, National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer (EFO) certification, Center for Public Safety Excellence Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation, NIMS ICS 300, 400, and 305. Fire Inspector 1031, Fire Investigator 1033 certifications.
