Exceeding Expectations

Carrboro Fire Department operated from two fire stations providing coverage to the Town of Carrboro, population 21,190 and 6.59 square miles as well as the South Orange Fire District, population 3,846 and 12.37 square miles. Carrboro is routinely the most residentially dense community in the State of North Carolina. A contributing factor to this is the amount of off-campus housing for UNC students.

Carrboro is a 36 member all-career department with daily minimum staffing of 9 personnel. We staff two engines, one ladder truck, and soon a tanker (jump company with ladder crew). All hazards response is provided to the service area, but EMS transport is provided by Orange County EMS. All personnel are EMT-B and provide first responder care on EMS calls. The shift schedule is a 3/4 (24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 96 off).

In addition to our all-hazards response model, we also conduct fire inspections as well as community risk reduction efforts through public education and community outreach.

Minimum Requirements: Firefighter II Certification (North Carolina or IFSAC/Pro-Board); 18 years of age; high school diploma/GED
