The Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), FL is seeking a seasoned professional to become a part of the leadership team of the school district’s Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness division as the new Chief Fire Official.  BCPS is the sixth-largest school district in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida as well as being the largest employer in Broward County.  The District is Florida’s first fully accredited school system since 1962 and has nearly 261,000 students and approximately 110,00 adult students in 241 schools, centers and technical colleges, and 92 charter schools.  BCPS serves a diverse student population, representing 177 different countries and 151 different languages.  The district has 14,329 Instructional Staff, 10,983 Clerical and Support Staff, 1,587 Administrators encompassing 26,899 permanent employees.   BCPS is the first district in the U.S. to receive the Cambridge District of the Year Award.  Broward County is located in southeastern Florida with an estimated population of 1.9 million residents and is one of three counties in South Florida that make up the Miami Metropolitan Area.

The school district is seeking a full-time Chief Fire Official to help create a safety environment for all of the staff and students of the district for the enjoyment of all levels of education and programs they have to offer.  The Chief Fire Official coordinates fire and safety code compliance activities and meets all responsibilities and enforcement matters pertaining to life, health and fire safety.  The position is responsible for risk reduction and fire safety evaluations so that all facilities receive their Annual Comprehensive Facilities Inspection (ACFI), conducts plan reviews, supervises the Inspectors, and more – all in accordance with the State Department of Education Regulations.

·         An engaged professional with a strong background in modern fire, fire code, building code, emergency management and all hazards’ practices for educational facilities.

·         A person that understands the need for, and how to use, data for problem solving, risk reduction efforts, and effective communication.

·         The ability and desire to coach and mentor staff in order to foster personal growth and leadership talent.

The position requires:

·         Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering or related field from an accredited institution.

·         A minimum of eight (8) years of experience and training, within the last thirteen (13) years, in the field related to the title of the position.

·         A current Florida State Certification as a Municipal Fire Safety Inspector or have received equivalent training in another state and pass a state written examination to become certified in the State of Florida prior to being recommended for School Board appointment.

·         Successful completion of the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF) class for existing educational facilities and Division of State Fire Marshal’s Rule Chapter 69A-58 is required, or within one year of appointment, verification of completion of course conducted by the State Department of Education to inspect existing school facilities, in accordance with the Florida Building Code and State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF).

·         Experience in safety and/or the coordination of fire safety inspections and/or fire protection activities.

·         Knowledge of the state and federal regulations regarding fire safety, prevention and inspection.

·         Ability to work with and acquire working knowledge of local governmental procedures and, regulations pertaining to fire safety for students and staff in the schools and other facilities.

·         OSHA 10-hour General Industry Training Course Certification.

·         Computer skills as required for the position.

The annual salary range is $84,641 – 159,087+/- DOQ plus includes a robust comprehensive benefit package.   Broward County School Systems is part of the Florida Retirement System.
