This course focuses on those aspects of leadership not covered in any book, manual or traditional fire officer curriculum. Students will engage in leadership lessons from the firehouse and understand the difference between leading in the station and managing the fire ground and recognize why this leadership vs. management concept is so critical to the role of company officer. Students will learn about the necessity of documentation and discipline and how they must exist for success at the company and battalion level. Students will work through several atypical real-world scenarios that will engage the student and force them to think about their own actions. In the end the students will leave with lessons learned from experiences of other company officers and insight into how to be a successful and safe company officer.
This course is relatable to any company officer looking to improve their skill sets to better perform for their organization, their crew and themselves. The course seeks to provide relevant experiences and knowledge to provide pathways for success for these key fire service leadership position. The course examines all aspects of company officer leadership and management, communications, documentation, human resource development and community risk reduction. Students will be engaged in conversation, situations and scenarios that will cause pause and reflection as well as action to stimulate growth.
